In May 1982, Roger George founded a business dedicated to the importation of British Products, at the time mainly foodstuffs, with a view to serving the large expatriate community in the Brussels area as well as bringing a little part of the U.K. to Belgium.
The business is situated just outside of Brussels in the small village of Everberg (near Kortenberg) and is in a very good British 'catchment' area being close to ICI's European Headquarters and only 7 minutes drive from two main British schools in the area, which makes it a natural residential area for the Brit's. It is also just 5 minutes drive from the main AutoRoute (E40) and 10 minutes from Zavantem, the Belgian National Airport.
The building is an old dairy in superb country grounds, and has just been renovated and restored in an old rustic style giving it a unique character and making it stand out from other businesses in similar sectors e.g. supermarkets. The site in Everberg has enormous potential, based on the ideas of the George family (this being a real family business both in the U.K. and in Belgium) and although delayed in the past by planning problems these transformations have now been completed, resulting in a small department store on three floors filled with the very best of British products.
"My overall concept," says Roger George, "is to provide the expats as well as our continental cousins with a British Supermarket ; a Boot's and a W.H Smith's all rolled into one" - so far it has been most successful.
The company has its own offices and warehouse facility in the U.K. in Norfolk, so it is in easy access of the port of Ipswich. Having such a U.K. base is most important and means that the business can be in constant touch with the U.K. scene and with developments in all the various fields of activity. The company joined the COSTCUTTER group in 1992 which has been enormously beneficial to both Stonemanor and it's customers. This is a dynamic company and together with Costcutter will continue to bring new British products and ideas to its customers all the time not only in Belgium but across Europe.
